Funeral services for Gail “Susie” Person were held on Monday, Aug. 12, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burt. Burial was in the Burt Township Cemetery.

Gail Louise “Susie” Person was born June 17, 1943, in Algona, Iowa, the daughter of Woodrow “Puggy” and Margaret “Bett” (Householder) Pettit. She grew up on the farm and attended school in Fenton, graduating from Sentral in 1961. Following her schooling she moved to Cedar Rapids and worked at Rockwell Collins Inc. She later moved back to the Lone Rock area and drove a grain truck for Everett “Toots” Householder.

On November 9, 1963, Susie was united in marriage to John Person at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. After their marriage they lived on the family farm near Lone Rock where they raised their family. While the children were growing up  Susie began volunteering at the care center in Bancroft. Susie later ran the Chatter Box Café in Lone Rock from 1999-2014. She then went to work at Brookstone Lodge and Suites in Algona.   

Susie loved the time she was able to spend with family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed doing puzzles, taking care of her chickens and trying her luck at the casino.  She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Susie died Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at her home, at the age of 81.

She is survived by her husband, John; children, Allen Person of Des Moines; Michael (Megan) Person of East Bound, WA; Teri (David) Kathman of Spencer; Gary Person of Lone Rock; Amy (Michael) Bierstedt of Fenton; 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; brother, Bernard “Butch” and Margie Pettit of Buckeye, AZ; sister, Peggy Preston of Fenton and sister-in-law, Ilene “Patti” and Kenny Krause of Emmetsburg and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jake, Beeler and Roscoe Pettit; brother-in-law, Wayne Preston; sisters-in-law, Betty (Carlos) Engelby and Jackie (Donald) Nelson; nephews, Barry Preston and Donald Pettit.
